How to lose 501(c)(3) status?
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) automatically revokes the 501(c)(3) status for all nonprofit organizations that fail to submit the appropriate Form 990 Information Report for three consecutive years. Specifically, nonprofit leaders must submit the appropriate Form 990 Information Report on the 15th day of the fifth month after the fiscal year end each year. If they fail to submit the report for three consecutive years, they will receive a letter notifying them that their 501(c)(3) status has been revoked.
